Preliminary Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

Denotation:
We can see a man standing in a smart suit wearing what appear to be trainers. We also see a range of colours the “University Link” standing out because it is pink; we also see the other little subtitles and texts in a different font which is not formal at all and is in a light blue font.
There’s a white background behind the black suit.

Connotation:
The meaning as to why the man is wearing a suit isn’t all clear because he doesn’t blend in with the pieces of texts on the magazine, it’s almost as if he wearing the suit and the trainers to represent that university life isn’t all that serious, the trainers could be representing the fun side of university, making friends, going to parties whilst the suit side of university is the education, going to lessons, studying and doing exams.
The black suit stands out more; it’s bolder because of the white background, it sort of highlights the man.
Misé-en-scene:
Props – In the magazine there are no props, pretty plain.
Costume – He’s wearing a plain black suit with a black tie and a white shirt.
Non-Verbal Communication: From his posture it could be that he’s quite kept to himself because his hands are in his pockets, the buttons on his blazer are partially done which could mean he’s a bit laid back.
Setting – the setting is just a plain white background which aims to make the main image stand out more.
Lightning – There appears to be no lightning used.
